Doing America
Believe me, the Queen Mary is not the only 'queen' in Long Beach, however she is surely the most famous. This mighty ship was once the largest passenger liner afloat. Now she is permanently anchored in Long Beach Harbor, and houses a hotel, restaurants, bars, shops and a museum. The city is also proud of it's new Convention Center and the renowned Long Beach Grand Prix auto race. Other nearby attractions include 'Ports of Call. Marineland, Watt's Towers, Signal Hill Oilfields and L.A. Harbor Cruises. This is also the gateway to Catalina Island, with frequent flights from Long Beach Airport or via the daily roundtrip steamship S.S. Avalon,
As a teen ager (with fake ID) years ago, I used to drive down from L.A. to the infamous Continental, then the only gay bar in town. Today there are over thirty gay establishments, and Long Beach, with a metropolitan population of nearly half a million, is California's fifth largest city.
The battle of the discos is concentrated between Ripples at 5101 E. Ocean in Belmont Shores and the Diamond Horseshoe at 2523 E. Anaheim in Wilmington. Currently Ripples gets the humpy guys while the Horseshoe hosts the foxy ladies, and also entertains a mixed crowd after hours on weekends from 2 until 5 a.m. Both parking lots are cruisy too, but beware of the LBPD in the vicinity of Ripples. discos are the Inspiration at 5211 N. Atlantic, which gets a happily mixed bag, and Golden T's at 740 E. Broadway, primarily lesbian orientated.
Wellington Club Baths at 1202 E. Anaheim (Wilmington) is virtually an institution..private club catering to "jocks" in their twenties and thirties. Now it is being seriously challenged by the new and clean 1350 club, also private and located at 1350 Locust. Glen's Turish Baths at 510 W. Anaheim is open to the public and gets an older crowd. The Raymoure Motel and Bunkhouse at 1645 Pacific Coast Highway is the only gay place to stay and I have heard varying reports. I usually stay at Rochelle's, next to Long Beach Airport or the Hyatt on Pacific
Ccast Highway.
The best gay restaurants are Roman IV at 14 Elm, Diver's Cove at 5760 E. 2nd St. and the Impact at 6101 N. Cherry. Some good 'straight' dinner houses include Hugo's at the Hyatt, Lombardo's, Velvet Turtle, Jungry Jose's and the fun Greek Taverna Papadakis in San Pedro.
Hottest of the neighborhood beer and wine cruise bars are Broadway Eddie's (which may be adding liquor), 3348 E. Broadway, First'n'Last, 1064 E. Broadway, Lil Lucy's, 1200 E. Broadway and the Haven at 256 Long Beach Blvd. Hoop's Coop is a friendly girls' bar at 2718 E. Anaheim. Three Leather and levi bars are located in North Long Beach. They are Mike's Corral at Artesia and Cherry, (the only cherry around here), Stallion at 5823 N. Atlantic and 444 South,

at 444 South St. The former two were holding jampacked 'slave auctions' until the LBPD reared its ugly head, and one can only hope that by press time things will be back to normal (?)
Most Angelinos wouldn't dream of heading out for a night in Long Beach anymore than San Franciscans go to Oakland, or New Yorkers living in Manhattan visit the other
boroughs. This is a mistake. because Long Beach is a prospering fun city, that has really come into its own. By freeway, it is little more than a half hour drive from dowriton Los Angeles, so if you are visiting Southern California, do try to squeeze in a couple of days for Long Beach. Chances are you won't be disappointed...'even if you don't 'dig' queens.
